Culture & museums in the Ruhr area

Museum Folkwang, Essen

This museum is one of Germany’s most renowned museums of art with an outstanding collection of painting and sculptures of the 19th century, classical modern art and features a collection of art after 1945 as well as photography. Distance is approximately 15 minutes by car.

Stiftung Zollverein, Essen

Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site: 100 hectares, distributed over the central shaft facilities of Zollverein XII, the Shafts 1/2/8 and the coking plant premises. 100 hectares which fill the term “industrial culture” with life like no other place. More than 25 years after its closure, the once largest colliery in Europe combines culture and dining, design and architecture, handicraft and the creative industry – as the only World Heritage Site of the Ruhr Area. Distance is approximately 25 minutes by car.

Villa Hügel, Essen

With its 269 rooms and 8,100 sqm usable floor space, situated within 28 ha of park, the Villa Hügel is far more than merely the residence of entrepreneur Alfred Krupp – it is a symbol of German industrialization. Distance is approximately 20 minutes by car.

Gasometer Oberhausen

The Gasometer is more than just an industrial monument. Since its decommissioning about twenty years ago it has developed into the landmark of the city of Oberhausen. Beyond that it has become an entire region's identification sign that cannot be overlooked. Built in the late 1920's, Europe's largest disc-type gas holder is an impressive reminder of the heavy industry that characterised the Ruhr for more than a century. ‚Deutsche Oper am Rhein‘ – German Opera on the Rhine, Düsseldorf / Duisburg

This opera company is divided into two cities and two sections: The German Opera on the Rhine in Düsseldorf and the Ballet on the Rhine in Duisburg perform since 1956. Driving distance approximately 30 minutes to Düsseldorf; approximately 20 minutes to Duisburg.

König-Pilsener-ARENA in Oberhausen

This is one of Germany’s many multi-purpose arenas and part of the leisure and shopping center, CentrO. The venue was built in Neue Mitte Oberhausen, a former industrial plant. And perhaps it hosts a show that would interest you. Distance is approximately 20 minutes by car.

K21 ‚Kunstsammlung‘ Art Collection, Düsseldorf

This museum is part of the art collection of the state of North Rhine Westphalia. It is formed of three different exhibition venues: the K20, the K21 inside the ‘Ständehaus’ and the ‘Schmela Haus’. In its 50 years of history this art collection gained a significant profile as a museum of art of the 20th century. Distance is approximately 30 minutes by car.

Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf

The Kunstmuseum and the Kunspalast has been united in a foundation with the Opening of the Museum Kunstpalast in September 2001. The beginnings of the Collection of the Kunstmuseum is dated back in the early 18th century and is increased to more than 100.000 Paintings, Sculptures, Drawings, Graphics, Photographies, applied arts objects and glass. Kunsthalle, Düsseldorf

Experiments and explorations in art and sensory perception: Under the auspices of Gregor Jansen, the decidedly individual building on Grabbeplatz has established itself as a pool of international movements and local trends, new talent and big names. Opening its doors in 1967, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf instantly became a pillar of the art community and a temple of possibilities, a place free of bias, a nucleus of inspiration, hotbed of discussion, aesthetic pioneer and occasionally agent provocateur. Tonhalle, Düsseldorf

One of Germany’s most beautiful concert halls was built in 1926 for the GeSoLei exhibition as a planetarium, the biggest in the world at the point of construction. During the 1970s it was converted into a concert hall. Distance is approximately 25 minutes by car.
